The ACIEM Foundation serves children with genetic errors whose life-saving treatments are under-covered by insurance and government assistance programs. We provide financial assistance to these families in need, so that each child affected with disorders of metabolism may have the specialized foods, formulas, and dietary supplements necessary for the best chance possible for normal development.
Since disorders of metabolism commonly last a lifetime, our mission is long-term in nature. Once the ACIEM Foundation commits to helping a child in need, we will do so for as long as the child needs us.

About Inborn Errors of Metabolism-
A complicated problem in layman’s terms even I can understand. :)
Inborn errors of metabolism (“IEMs”) is the term used to encompass a group of disorders that are genetic, and therefore are present in a child’s DNA when he or she is conceived. In this case, metabolism refers to specific biochemical reactions in each and every cell in the body. These reactions turn the energy stored in the chemicals in our food into the energy needed to run our bodies. While the incidence of IEMs may seem low, it is not zero incidence. Children are born every day with IEMs, and the impact on the quality of life is an immediate and life-threatening challenge. While insurance and government programs may cover the cost of treatment for many, it is not always there to suport those in greatest need. These costs are within our reach with your support.
You have made a difference! Meet Jessica and Daysi.
Our first two beneficiaries, Jessica and Daysi, both have requirements for Vitamin B12 that are 10,000 times the normal daily needs because the specific chemical reaction involving the processing of B12 in their cells is damaged. Their condition is known as Cobalamin C Disorder, which, without treatment, leads to a buildup of certain chemicals in their bodies that cause high risk for blood clots and stroke.
With The ACIEM Foundation’s support, they receive the required daily injections of B12, which has corrected their biochemical abnormalities and returned them to good health.
The sterile, concentrated, specific B12 for their injections must be made for them at a certified compounding pharmacy and costs their families more than $100 per month. But these life-saving injections are not covered by insurance because they are categorized not as “medicine”, but as “vitamins”.
Yes, as unbelievable as it sounds, these children are covered for the costs of the syringes used to inject their B12, but the actual therapy that will save their lives is not covered.
But with your help, we have made a life-saving difference in their lives. These children, and the thousands born every year who the insurance companies and government agencies forget are forgotten no longer.
